The songs were re-issued on the Anthology. A fourth collection, including union songs and some songs recorded after World War II, was created but not released until 2000. This work provided a direct inspiration to the young folk movement that was developing at that time. Although he considered himself an abstract-expressionist, with a special interest in film, he had a hobby collecting old folk and country records. The album is divided into three sections, Ballads, Social Music, and Songs. At a time when many people considered these records ephemeral, he took them seriously and developed a collection of several thousand songs. The songs were re-issued on the Anthology from previously issued 78 rpm records. Harry Smith was a bohemian who lived in Berkeley in the late 1940's and 1950's. Many previously ignored songs became standards at hootenannies and folk clubs due to its role as a touchstone for the folk revival in the late 1940's and 1950's.
